The area in the Dikili district of İzmir, previously used for mining activities, has regained its green cover thanks to the rehabilitation works carried out by the General Directorate. In the 60-hectare former mining site, rehabilitated approximately 10 years ago by the Bergama Forest Enterprise Directorate under the İzmir Regional Directorate of Forestry, natural life has begun to flourish once again.
Within the scope of rehabilitation efforts conducted in former mining areas, an extensive afforestation project was carried out in 2015 at the former mining site in Dikili, following the cessation of operations. In this context, a total of 80,000 saplings were planted in the area, including 76,000 Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia) and 4,000 Mediterranean cypress. Following the afforestation work, maintenance and protection activities were carried out to ensure the site's healthy development.
As a result of these efforts, the area gradually regained its green cover, and wildlife has also returned. Wild horses, hares, and various bird species have begun to inhabit the rehabilitated site.
As the General Directorate of Forestry, we aim to rehabilitate former mining areas through rehabilitation works, reintegrating them into the natural environment and supporting biodiversity. These efforts continue across the country with determination, in line with environmental protection and sustainable forestry objectives.
