Samurai Beetle Released into Nature within the Biological Control of Brown Skunk Beetle

6/25/2025 A+ A-

As the General Directorate of Forestry, we continue our efforts to control the Brown Skunk Beetle Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys), which has caused significant damage to agricultural and forest products in our country in recent years.

In this context, the parasitoid species called Trissolcus japonicus (Samurai Beetle), which is the natural enemy of the insect, is being multiplied in the Beneficial Organism Production Laboratories established at the Artvin and Trabzon Regional Directorates of Forestry and released into nature. The Samurai Beetle parasitizes the eggs of the Brown Skunk Beetle, preventing the insect from multiplying. Thus, the population is brought under control by natural means.

Within the scope of the releases carried out in 2025; 30.000 Samurai Beeflies were released into nature in the districts of Borçka, Arhavi, and Murgul in Artvin between the 17-23 of June. Last year, 1,200 were released in this laboratory with a trial production.

In Trabzon, 3,000 Samurai Beeflies were released in the districts of Beşikdüzü, Vakfıkebir, Çarşıbaşı, Tonya, Akçaabat, Ortahisar, Yomra, and Arsin between the 16 -17 of June.

These biological control studies stand out as an environmentally sensitive, sustainable, and nature-friendly method that does not require the use of chemical pesticides.

In addition, pest monitoring and biotechnical control studies are continuing throughout 2025 by setting up 252 pheromone traps under the responsibility of the Artvin and Trabzon Regional Directorates of Forestry.

As the General Directorate of Forestry, we continue to contribute to the protection of the ecosystem and produce efficient solutions against harmful organisms with biological and biotechnical control methods.
